About This Project

The creation of the HMS Calypso website began in 2015 in anticipation of the 100th anniversary of Newfoundland's contribution to the Battle of the Somme during World War I. The Calypso team is made up of individuals working at Marine Institute - Memorial University of Newfoundland. We wanted to recognize the maritime contribution of Newfoundland in World War I. This contribution did not go unrecognized as Sir Winston Churchill once said that Newfoundlanders were "the best small boat men in the world." Wanting to explore our maritime history, we would like this project to grow to include the Mercantile Marine in WWI, and the Merchant Marine in WWII.

This project began with the discovery of the architectural drawings of HMS Calypso in the Digital Archives Initiative (DAI). Several boxes of items from the Calypso were then located at the Maritime History Archive with some additional material coming from the Rooms. Much of this material has been digitized and is available on the DAI or at The Rooms. The team discovered many websites which cover the Calypso and her history. We wish to provide a comprehensive website which could be used by researchers to discover more about the Newfoundland Royal Naval Reserve.

On this website there are many faces of the men who served or were trained on the Calypso. We have posted them in the hopes that someone might recognize someone and let us know more about them. We will update the website when we have received documentation confirming their identity. If you would like to contribute information to this site, please email we.remember@mi.mun.ca
